We designed our signature Pauline Collection of rugs based on tiles from the iconic Key West home of Ernest Hemingway and Pauline Pfeiffer.

Built in the 1850s by a shipping merchant, the elegant French Colonial style house was in deep decay by the time Ernest and Pauline purchased it in 1931. Pauline convinced her uncle to buy the house as a wedding gift for the couple.

Pauline oversaw a complete renovation and incorporated unique French cement tiles in the upstairs bathroom which feature a Deco-style bird and fish motif. At Archeo, we have long admired these tiles for both their color and design.

In 2019 we partnered with a London based non-profit focused on revitalizing traditional textile arts in Afghanistan. We worked directly with a female design team in Kabul to create a line of rugs inspired by the tiles. The rugs in this collection are hand-knotted by women weavers in Afghanistan. The goal is to empower and employ women as well as create timeless rugs that tell a story.
