This currency piece was used specifically as brideswealth.  The opposite of a dowry, a brideswealth is paid by the groom's family to the bride's family.  This beautifully piece, forged in the shape of a spear head, was exchanged as a symbolic gesture of appreciation for the addition of a new daughter to the family.
