This beautiful wood saddle was designed for the small horses of the Mongolian Steppe.  Mongol horsemen customarily said an incantation over their saddle before setting out.  This tradition was begun by Genghis Khan himself. 

Originally the saddle was brightly painted - traces of red and black paint remain, giving this piece a rich patina.

This saddle dates to the mid 1900s.
