Christianity was established in Ethiopia as early as the 4th century. Crosses like this were received at baptism and worn around the neck or placed at the top of a staff. They were people's most prized possession. The intertwined geometric patterning of the lattice-work represents everlasting life and is specific to the tribe who designed it.
