Senufo Firespitter Mask
Senufo, Ivory Coast 8" x 6" x 14"
This exceptional wooden carved mask is from the Senufo tribe in the Ivory Coast. It is called a Firespitter because during ceremony, the dancer would hold in his mouth a swarm of bees. At the penultimate moment, he would exhale the bees through the snout of the mask, earning it the name Firespitter.
