Living along the Bandiagara escarpment, the Dogon remain very connected to their ancient religion. They have preserved the artistic and cultural traditions and continue to hold masked dance ceremonies. This solemn mask has an incredibly thick, encrusted patina - evidence of offerings made to the spirit of the mask. A small satchel, attached to the stylized nose brings even greater power to the wearer. Of particular interest are the receptive ears, low brow and overall elongated face.
20th century modern artists were often influenced by traditional African masks. This piece easily call those references to mind.
